Instructions for Smartphone Users

Please follow these instructions:
  1. Add the Facebook Application
  2. Invite Friends
  3. Make your rules
  4. Create a smartphone username
  5. Get your smartphone
  6. Audit

Step 1. Add the Facebook Application

  • Click here (opens in a new window) to add the Locaccino for Facebook application.
  • After you have logged into Facebook, click on the “Allow” button as shown below.

  • Read the terms of the study, check “I agree to the above,” if you agree to participate in the study.

Step 2. Invite your friends

Click on the Invite tab and invite friends to add Locaccino. Pick the friends you want to invite and click the send button. Your friends are welcome to join the study (if they are from CMU). Don’t forget to nudge them!

Step 3. Make your rules

Click on the Privacy Settings tab and set your location sharing preferences that determine the conditions under which your friends can see your location (e.g. “My classmates can only see my location during week days 9am-5pm and while I am on the campus”)

Create a smartphone username

To make Mobile Locaccino work, you’ll need to create a username and password for your mobile device. Click on Get Started or Download, pick your username and password, and click on save. The page also includes instructions on how to download and install the mobile application.

Please Note – there is no need to install a locator on your laptop.

Get your smartphone

We will provide you with a Nokia N95 phone for the duration of this study. You are expected to use this phone as your main cell phone, using your existing SIM card, and to return it in good condition at the end of the study. You need to be a customer of AT&T or T-Mobile, and to enable a data plan on your phone. An unlimited data plan is highly recommended. If you do not currently have a data plan, please arrange one before arriving to pick up the phone. If you need to buy one, we will provide you with an additional amount of up to $15 in Amazon gift certificate.

Coordinate a smartphone pickup with Linda Francona (email: laf20@cs.cmu.edu, Tel: 412-268-9934, room: Smith Hall 231).

Use the following instructions and the map to reach our office in Smith Hall:

  • Enter main entrance of Hamburg Hall (see arrow 1 on map).
  • Turn left and go to the end of the hall. Go down the
    stairs.
  • Go out the door and walk across parking lot to Smith Hall (see arrow 2 on map).
  • Enter Smith Hall and look for staircase on your left. Go up the
    stairs.
  • Pass the elevator on your left and walk across the hall to rooms 232 and 234.

Step 6. Audit

Audit at least three times a week on the Friends’ Views page. Indicate how comfortable you are with each instance a friend had tried to check your location.
